Consulting & Advisory

Consulting & Advisory is an independent technology advisory service that helps organizations evaluate options, assess risk, and make informed platform decisions before committing to a build.

Good technical decisions require honest advice. We provide independent assessments, architecture reviews, and written recommendations for organizations that need clarity before they commit to a direction. You are not required to engage us to build anything. The advice stands on its own.

Our consulting work covers two broad situations: teams that do not yet know what to build, and teams that have something in production that is not working as well as it should. Both benefit from an outside perspective that has no stake in the outcome.

When the decision is not yet clear

Some of the most consequential technical decisions happen before a single line of code is written. Choosing the wrong platform, underestimating the scope of a migration, or locking into an architecture that does not scale with your needs can cost significantly more to fix later than to get right at the start.

We work with teams that are evaluating platforms, scoping a new build, or trying to understand what a project will actually cost before committing to it. This includes organizations comparing CMS options, teams deciding between a custom build and an off-the-shelf solution, and decision-makers who need a realistic cost and timeline estimate to take to their board or management team.

We assess your requirements, your team's capabilities, and your long-term cost of ownership, then produce a written recommendation that lays out the options, the trade-offs, and a clear direction. We do not steer you toward a particular platform or vendor. The recommendation reflects your situation, not ours.

When something in production needs attention

Inherited platforms are rarely well-documented. Teams often find themselves maintaining systems they did not build, running on versions that are no longer supported, with technical debt that has accumulated over years. Security vulnerabilities go unaddressed, performance degrades, and the cost of making changes keeps rising.

We audit legacy codebases, aging CMS installations, and custom web applications, and produce a written report covering the current state of the system, the technical debt, the security exposure, and a prioritised path forward. Whether the right answer is a targeted modernization, a phased migration, or a full rebuild, the report gives you what you need to make that decision with confidence.

We also conduct architecture and infrastructure reviews for teams whose development process has become slow, fragile, or expensive to maintain. If deployments are painful, if the codebase has become difficult to work in, or if the infrastructure has grown without a clear plan, a structured review can identify where the friction is coming from and what it would take to address it.

What you get

Every engagement produces a written deliverable: a structured report or recommendation document that you own and can act on independently. Depending on the scope of the work, this typically includes an assessment of the current situation, a set of clearly defined options, the risks and trade-offs associated with each, cost and timeline indications, and a recommended path forward with a prioritised action plan.

The output is designed to be useful whether you engage us for the next step or take it to another team entirely. We write for the people who will make the decision, which means the document is clear enough for a non-technical executive and detailed enough for the technical team that will implement it.

How we work

We do not have a preferred platform. We have no incentive to recommend one technology over another, and we do not benefit from steering you toward a more complex or expensive solution. Our recommendations are grounded in production experience across a wide range of platforms, industries, and team sizes, which means the advice reflects how these systems actually behave over time, not what their documentation promises.

An engagement typically starts with a structured discovery session to understand your context, your constraints, and what a useful outcome looks like for you. From there, we conduct the assessment and produce the written deliverable. Timelines vary depending on the scope, but most advisory engagements are completed within one to three weeks.

If you are unsure whether your situation calls for a consulting engagement or a more hands-on development project, we are happy to have that conversation first. And if you are ready to get started, get in touch.
